Sun and Wind

"In Miami, ordinary days are always victorious
And filled with the same warmness and gentleness;
The summer is endless for us -
Fulfilled with triumph and kindness…

In the hot summer time the King of Sun
Rules until the hurricanes season –
Taking time off for disputes
And following the fable from Aesop –
The Sun argues.

The mighty Wind from the far seas
Blows on trees
And throws,
And sways
The branches and leaves.

Miamians hurry indoors
And looking for water, ice, and shelters;
Then, barricading the homes,
And waiting and waiting for the contest victors.
People try their best as the Wind might.

Every year we learn more –
Easier influence masses
With kindness and gentleness
Then with force and war!"

John Updike, "September"

"The breezes taste
Of apple peel.
The air is full
Of smells to feel-
Ripe fruit, old footballs,
Burning brush,
New books, erasers,
Chalk, and such.
The bee, his hive,
Well-honeyed hum,
And Mother cuts
Chrysanthemums.
Like plates washed clean
With suds, the days
Are polished with
A morning haze."

Football Literacy

You know that boys and young men like books, the NFL books and databases. Librarians and educators may score a touchdown with your male readers. Football literacy will give educators the information tool they need to understand how the NFL resources in the library will get boys reading, whether it's a print book or on a computer. The Football season starts on September 9th, and it is a perfect time to kick off the Football Literacy.

Back-to-School IT Projects

Back-to-school IT projects reshaping campus life. Many changes show a broader shifts in enterprise and consumer technology.
Not surprisingly, wireless is fast becoming the default network connection for campus users, who typically own two of four wireless-enabled mobile devices. Virtualization and growth in cloud-based services are centralizing and offloading IT functions. This changes, coupled with soaring video traffic, are triggering bandwidth upgrades at all levels. There are five major areas of technology change:
  • 802.11n and all-wireless access,
  • the rising tide of mobile devices,
  • centralization of IT through virtualization,
  • increasing clouds,
  • bandwidth or bust.
